DEFEND-BIO’s main scientific objective is two-fold

a) Generate novel understanding of biosphere defenders as agents of change in NBS and the just and effective implementation of law and policy for integrated responses to biodiversity stewardship and human well-being and

b) Analyse how law and policy LAC and European actors can support actions by biosphere defenders on NBS for just sustainability transformations.

Defenders with legal tools and strategies to advance environmental human rights, particularly in the context of the Escazú Agreement and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Enabling environments for defenders to scale out locally-led NBS and scale-up impact at regional and global levels to support environmental democracy, human rights and sustainability transformations.

Legal empowerment tools and a model law designed to support advocates and biosphere defenders across various jurisdictions in LAC to gain awareness of their rights and influence law and policy.
